Overview:
The Manyallaluk community, 100 kilometres from Katherine, borders Arnhem Land, Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park and Kakadu National Park. This is a unique community enterprise offering one-day hands-on cultural experiences to visitors.
The Manyallaluk One Day Culture Tour begins when you are picked up from your accommodation in Katherine at 8:00am and driven out to Manyallaluk
to spend the day with the local Aboriginal people sharing their culture and giving you a hands on experience that you will never forget! On arrival at Manyallaluk you are greeted by your Aboriginal guides for the day. After a refreshing cup of billy tea the morning is spent on a short but informative walk where you are shown the bush tucker and bush medicines that are in season.
On your return there will be time for a swim in the spring fed swimming hole before lunch that includes fresh damper, Barramundi and Kangaroo.
Afternoon activities include traditional painting, fire lighting, spear throwing, didjeridu playing and basket weaving. You will be encouraged and welcomed to participate in all these activities. Return to Katherine approximately 5:30pm.
Manyallaluk also has a separate art & craft centre with a small gallery for displaying artifacts. The Art & Craft Centre is open Monday through Friday during the tourist season (by appointment at other times) and sells paintings on bark and canvas, didjeridu's, pandanus baskets and mats, string bags, beads, small sculptures, clap sticks and fire sticks.
