Overview:
Mungo National Park is part of a World Heritage area that contains the longest continuous record of Aboriginal life in Australia dating back 40,000 to 60,000 years. Who better to tell the story of Mungo than the traditional caretakers of this land, the Barkindji. The tour heads northeast to Mungo National Park, a series of dry lakes now. Along the way your local Barkindji Aboriginal tour guide will interpret the native flora and fauna used in bush tucker and bush medicines. No other area of inland Australia combines a record of past environmental and human history spanning the last glacial period as does the Willandra Lakes Heritage Region. Arriving at Mungo National Park Visitors Information Centre you will be provided with information about the park and its natural and cultural heritage. There's time to meander through the Historic Mungo Woolshed built by Chinese labourers and still stands as it did in 1869. The tour then takes you through the basin to the spectacular 'Walls of China'. Significant sites of well-preserved middens (campfires), cooking hearths and burial sites are visible. Relax and enjoy the spectacular sunset over the hauntingly beautiful Mungo landscape. Travel is on board an air-conditioned coach.
