The Chivaree campsite is at Janie Creek, 14kms south of the Aboriginal community of Mapoon, about 80kms north of Weipa. Accommodation is in quality tent-cabins on raised platforms with modern bush camping facilities. Work alongside local Aboriginal Rangers and Wildlife Officers as they tag and measure nesting turtles, protect freshly laid eggs, remove ghost nets from the beach and collect valuable data.
Overview:
Every year hundreds of ghost nets drift onto Cape York's western beaches, entangling marine life such as turtles. Chivaree Turtle Conservation Camp is an opportunity to work with the indigenous people of the region to save the dwindling turtle population.
